Ant Banks is an American record producer, rapper, and songwriter who is widely known for having released various albums like Sittin’ on Somethin’ Phat (1993) as well as produced a number of them such as the debut album of MC Ant titled The Great (1989). Ant has also dropped numerous EPs including Let It Be Known by Spice 1 (1991).

He has recalled that as a child, he had taken part in a music band at school and it was from there that he had learned to play a number of instruments along the way. At school, he had learned classical music, but at home, he had taught himself to play funk music on his digital keyboard. He would get interested in making music and would enjoy creating beats and recording his own versions. He has added that over a 7-year course from around 1981 to 1988, he had played a wide variety of instruments.
Banks has recollected that he had a friend named MC Ant in his school and they together had started out by just making a cassette with a beat, where Ant had capped as well as rapped. Their work had received appreciation that led them to make the first little tape that they took to school and had begun selling. It got popular all over school, and from the school, it had gone all over the city so much so that it became an evolution that everyone had to own an MC Ant tape. Many other people, however, were recording tapes and selling them out of the trunk of their cars and that had resulted in a stiff competition that Banks faced.
He has been noted for his skill in producing “funky” bass lines that have attained cross-over appreciation in the techno niche.
He has disclosed that he had taken a long hiatus from producing as he had felt a lack of motivation having believed that true talent has not been appreciated like it used to be before.
Banks has expressed concern over the music industry ever since 1998, having noticed everything to have turned rather nonsensical. He has been shocked to find that anyone can make a record about anything and it has not taken talent any longer to make hit records. The motivation to make a high-powered record is often overshadowed by someone who is able to make a great marketing gimmick and outshine talented artists. He has remembered that earlier, musicians would do their work based on their talents, and it was never for money or fame. It was simply as they would truly cherish their work and creation.
He has relished the Hyphy Movement in Oakland and wished that labels would be behind it in order to blow it up.
Ant has stated that he has his own personal studio with full-blown professional tools. He has worked in his studio around 4 days every week. He has not done his music publicly, or for anyone to analyze it. Ant has thoroughly enjoyed making music as an outlet for his creativity and emotions.
