In tonight’s The Voice episode, it was the first night of the Battles. Most of the coaches have gotten an idea of who they wanted to keep. The newbies were still learning on the job and so tonight was the first true test for Dan + Shay. Reba had to learn last season. It was now their turn to learn tonight.

There was also a Play Off Pass now. This pass would allow anyone to go straight to the playoffs and so of course everyone wanted it. Up first was Nathan Chester who battled against Bryan Olsen. They were a part of Team John. He gave them the song “Rolling in the Deep” by Adele. He felt they were both powerhouses. And he loves their differing styles.

These two were paired off in an epic battle. It helped that their talent could both be appreciated even as they were technically competing against each other. Bryn added a Bono feel to the song. Nathan added a John Legend feel to his rendition. They also added choreography. They harmonized really well. It was a great start to the night and none of the other coaches could help John with picking a winner. They tried to flip a coin to determine the winner because it was that close. John ultimately chose Nathan because John couldn’t see him going home.

There was a Steal from Dan + Shay. Reba tried to use hers as well. John surprised them all by handing Bryan the first Playoff Pass. He was the first person sent to the Playoffs. Next up was Team Dan + Shay. They paired off Karen Waldrup and Ryan Argast. They were both special to the coaches. They had used their Block to get Karen. They had quickly turned for Ryan after he performed their song. Dan + Shay put them together because they thought their performance would be the one to beat.

They also both have a Country feel. Ryan leaned more in Country Rock while Karen was more Old School Country. They were great storytellers with their voices and so the guys gave them one of their songs. They gave them “Save Me the Trouble”. They needed some coaching to get the harmonizing where it should be, but other than that they worked great together. They fed off each other’s energy. Their later performance really blew people away. They also dressed for the part. They both looked great tonight.

Still, there had to be a winner. John thought the winner was Karen. Chance the Rapper thought the winner was Karen. Reba was split on who the winner was. Dan + Shay later chose Karen. She stood out in that performance. There was a part where Ryan circled her onstage and her voice sounded like it had pierced through a cyclone. She was definitely worth keeping. The guys also held onto their PlayOff Pass for someone truly special. They just didn’t think that fit Ryan. Next up was Team Reba.

Reba paired Tae Lewis with L.Rodgers. They were unique in their own way. They were both forces of nature and so she gave them “We Don’t Fight Anymore” by Carly Pearce. Tae has been living in Nashville for a while now. He was hoping to become a black Country music performer only that genre doesn’t seem to have room for him. His own people didn’t know how to market him. Him being there tonight with Reba meant the world to Tae and he fought to stay on her team because he felt she genuinely believed in him.

The same for L. Rodgers. She could feel this song. She was once married herself. She was in a relationship and it seemed great on the outside looking in. She just couldn’t explain to herself why she was unhappy. She could connect to the song because she said that once the fight was gone then the marriage was over. She and Tae both got to play from a place of hurt. They were healing now and their performance sounded beautiful. Reba had a tough time picking a winner. She chose Tae because she felt Tae could sing anything.

Reba used her PlayOff Pass for L because was too unique to pass up. It also stopped Chance from using his Steal to get L onto his team. Next up was Team Chance. He paired Kamalei Kawa’a with Gabriel Goes. They were both Hawaiian boys. They both grew up there although Gabriel’s family was originally from Brazil. They also both knew people that survived the fires recently. Chance therefore gave them “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and it was the rendition by Israel “IZ” Kamakawiwoʻole. And not the “Wizard of Oz” version.

Israel’s rendition was very Hawaiian. There was a ukulele. There was a laidback quality to it. There was also more of a storytelling vibe to it and both Gabriel and Kamalei have that skill. Its why Chance paired them together. He didn’t just do it because of the Hawaiian connection. He did it because they have similar vibes and he quite honestly didn’t need two of them. Only the guys struggled during practice with this song. They had needed to strip it all the way down. And even then they weren’t entirely happy with it.

The band as well as the ukulele was added back to it for the final performance. There were good vibes to be had by all. No one could name a clear winner. Chance felt that winner was Kamalei. Kamalei connected to the song on a personal level that Gabriel never tried to reach. Gabriel was sadly eliminated tonight because he wasn’t as dedicated to the song or the lyrics as Kamalei was. Next up was Team John. He paired OK3 with Zoe Levert. They were a four women group tonight because they all had to harmonize with each other.

John gave them “The Bones” by Maren Morris. It was a Country song that he felt could move into Pop and Soul. Something he felt that all four women could do. There was just one problem. OK3 knew how to compliment each other and tackle different parts of the song so that they all shined. They didn’t know how to leave space for Zoe. Meaning she had to advocate for herself during rehearsals. She had to fight for room in that harmony. If she didn’t, they were going to completely forget about her and make themselves shine.

Zoe had to fight her corner. She eventually learned how to work with the other three women. They gave a great harmony. Zoe must have picked a trick or two because the end result had them sounding like her backup singers. They all sounded amazing. Zoe stood out. She gained Chance’s attention with one note. She even blew away Reba. They all thought the winner was Zoe. John felt the same and that’s why he named Zoe as the winner. She started off as the underdog. She quickly became the winner.

OK3 were sadly eliminated tonight. Next up was Team Reba. She paired Asher HaVon with Alyssa Crosby. She also gave them “We Don’t Need Another Hero” by Tina Turner. Tina was a Queen in her own right because her songs are so hard to replicate or even perform. Reba had to coach her two powerhouses through their performance tonight. It was one thing to sing with their eyes close during practice. It can’t happen on the stage. The artist has to look out at their audience and the audience has to feel seen.

Their final performance was amazing. It sounded truly amazing. The winner of that battle was Asher. And Alyssa was Stolen by Chance.

Reba didn’t have to say goodbye to anybody tonight.

THE END!
